چکیده

Morphometrics is a seductive mistress. Despite its current popularity, and despite concerted attempts to explain the revolution that occurred in its practice during the 1980s and 90s, it still lulls nascent practitioners down the garden path of apparent mathematical sophistication. In return they are often left bereft and bewildered, having squandered their time carrying out simplistic analysis without engaging with the mathematics on which the discipline is grounded (limiting their ability to address novel future dataanalysis challenges) and without gaining much insight into the biological processes that are supposed to be the focus of morphometric investigation. This, along with morphometrics’ historical link to phenetics, leaves morphometrics often resembling an academic ghetto that graduate students and advanced undergraduates are sometimes encourage to visit—to pick up some street smarts and a bit of local colour—but cautioned not to linger in; especially after dark.

Geometric morphometrics simplified

Although the theory andmethods of the relatively new field of geometric morphometrics are becoming well developed (for an overview, see [1]), it has not yet been applied as widely as it could be, owing to the lack of easily accessible introductory guides. This primer, by Miriam Zelditch and colleagues, should make the field more accessible because the new methods described here are relatively s...

The comparative study of intra-specific variations in the various populations of Clinopodes flavidus (Geophlilomorpha, Geophilidae) in Alborz Mountain, using geometric morphometrics

The aim of this study was to determine the variations among cephalic plates of individuals in two populations of Clinopodes flavidus in Alborz Mountains, by means of landmark-based techniques of geometric morphometrics. Therefore, 17 landmarks and semi-landmarks on the coxosternite of poison claw and seven landmarks and semi-landmarks on the tarsangulum of poison claw were selected using TpsDig...

Geometric morphometric comparison of trout barb (Capoeta trutta) in Bushehr basin

Some 78 specimencs of trout barb (Capoeta trutta) from four rivers of Bushehr Basin were caught by seine net to compare their morphology using geometric morphometrics. The specimens after anestethizing in 1% clove oil, were fixed in bufferd 10% formalin and transferred to the Isfahan University of Technology Ichthyology Museum for further studies. Geometric morphometric method were applied to a...

Use of otolithic morphometrics and ultrastructure for comparing between three goatfish species (family: Mullidae) from the northern Red Sea, Hurghada, Egypt

This work highlights the role of otolithic morphometrics, shape indices and ultrastructure in the identification of three Mullidae species from the Red Sea. Differences in otolithic measurements were detectable in all three-goatfish species. The statistical analysis of otolithic morphometric parameters showed that otolithic measurements are good indicators of fish size. For all three species, t...

Morphological correlates of sprint swimming speed in five species of spadefoot toad tadpoles: comparison of morphometric methods.

The relationship between vertebrate morphology and swimming performance has long interested biologists. Recent work on predator-induced morphological plasticity of anuran tadpoles has increased this interest. Here, I use data on five species of spadefoot toad tadpoles (Scaphiopodidae) to compare linear and geometric morphometrics. Linear measures explain only 7-26% of the variation in swimming ...
